Breaking hair: care that reduces breakage

When hair breaks, short fragments are left on the comb and clothes, and the lengths become uneven and don’t seem to grow. Here is how to tell breakage from hair loss, what causes it and how care helps hair become more elastic.

Breakage or hair loss

If the comb holds short fragments of different lengths without a white bulb at the end, that is breakage: the strand snaps along the length. Cosmetic care and habits work on it.

If full-length hairs with a bulb are falling out, noticeably more than usual, that is hair loss. It needs a trichologist or dermatologist, not just care for the lengths.

Why hair breaks

  • bleaching, frequent colouring, perms or chemical straightening;
  • a hot hairdryer, straightener and curling iron without heat protection;
  • brushing wet hair, tight hairstyles and elastics;
  • dryness: hair loses elasticity and snaps under strain;
  • imbalance: protein products alone without hydration make hair stiff and brittle.

ORO care for breaking hair

  • Reconstruction PRO Shampoo and Balsam — the system for damaged and brittle hair, with a complex of 5 proteins (keratin, silk, milk protein, collagen, cereal proteins) and murumuru butter. Recommended 2–3 times a week; if you wash daily, use the lighter Intensive Care Balsam on the other washes.
  • Lipid & Protein Therapy — a mask with sphingolipids, phospholipids, glycolipids, keratin and soy protein, once every 7–10 days.
  • BioHydra Therapy — in between, 1–2 times a week, when the lengths lack moisture and softness. Only one mask per wash.
  • Active Thermo Cream — before every hairdryer, straightener or curling iron.
  • Argan Elixir Oil — a few drops on dry lengths for smoothness and protection throughout the day.

Habits that reduce breakage

  • detangle only with balsam on, from the ends up, with a wide-tooth comb;
  • don’t rub hair with a towel — squeeze;
  • choose soft hair ties and avoid tight hairstyles;
  • dry on moderate heat and don’t hold the straightener on one section for long;
  • regularly trim ends that have already split.

Step by step

  1. 01Reconstruction PRO Shampoo on the scalp, 2–3 times a week (as needed if you wash more often).
  2. 02Mask when needed: Lipid & Protein Therapy once every 7–10 days, BioHydra in between.
  3. 03Reconstruction PRO Balsam for 2–3 minutes; on daily washes — Intensive Care Balsam.
  4. 04Detangle with balsam on, using a wide-tooth comb.
  5. 05Squeeze water out with a towel without rubbing.
  6. 06Active Thermo Cream before drying or styling.
  7. 07Dry on moderate heat; finish with a few drops of Argan Elixir Oil.

Common misconceptions

  • “Breaking hair only needs protein” — without hydration it can get even stiffer.
  • “Breakage is hair loss” — fragments without a bulb and shedding from the root are different problems.
  • “Care will repair hair permanently” — the effect is cosmetic and lasts with regular care.
  • “A hairdryer always damages hair” — on moderate heat and with thermo cream, drying is much safer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell breakage from hair loss?
With breakage, the comb holds short fragments without a bulb. With hair loss — full-length hairs with a white bulb at the end. For hair loss, see a trichologist.
Which ORO system suits breaking hair?
Reconstruction PRO — shampoo and balsam for damaged and brittle hair, 2–3 times a week, together with the Lipid & Protein Therapy mask once every 7–10 days.
Can I use a protein mask more often?
Lipid & Protein Therapy is rich, so once every 7–10 days is enough. In between, when moisture is lacking — BioHydra Therapy.
Why does hair break after bleaching?
Bleaching makes the strand more porous and less elastic. A regular mask, balsam, thermo cream before any heat and very gentle detangling are needed.
