Dry shampoo: is it harmful and how to use it
Dry shampoo saves the day when there’s no time to wash: the roots look fresh again within minutes. But it doesn’t wash your hair. Here is how it works, how to use it correctly and when it’s better to simply wash.
How dry shampoo works
Most dry shampoos are a powder (for example, starch-based) in a spray or loose form. It absorbs sebum at the roots, adds volume, and hair looks fresher.
But sebum, sweat, dust and styling residue stay on the scalp — dry shampoo only masks them. That is why it doesn’t replace washing with water and shampoo.
Is dry shampoo harmful
Occasionally used — no: between washes it is convenient and safe for most people. Problems appear when it replaces washing several days in a row: residue builds up on the scalp, hair looks dull, and the scalp may feel uncomfortable or itchy.
If irritation, itching or flaking appear after dry shampoo, stop using it, and if symptoms persist, see a specialist.
How to keep roots fresh longer
- choose a shampoo that suits your scalp: for roots that lose freshness quickly — the balanced cleansing of Intensive Care Shampoo, which suits daily use;
- wash as often as your scalp needs — daily washing with the right shampoo is normal;
- apply balsam only from mid-length;
- rinse shampoo and balsam thoroughly;
- touch your hair less and change your pillowcase more often.
Step by step
- 01Apply dry shampoo only to dry hair.
- 02Section the hair and apply to the roots from ~20–30 cm (spray) or use a little powder.
- 03Wait 1–2 minutes for it to absorb sebum.
- 04Massage the roots with your fingertips.
- 05Brush out the residue thoroughly and, if needed, blow with cool air.
- 06The next day — a proper wash with shampoo.
Common misconceptions
- “Dry shampoo is the same as washing” — it only absorbs sebum and doesn’t cleanse the scalp.
- “It can be used daily instead of washing” — residue builds up; it’s for 1–2 days between washes.
- “Daily washing damages hair” — if your scalp needs it, daily washing with the right shampoo is normal.
- “More product means longer freshness” — excess leaves a white cast and weighs roots down.
Frequently asked questions
- Is dry shampoo harmful?
- For most people, no, if used between washes. Harm appears when it replaces washing several days in a row and residue builds up on the scalp.
- How often can I use dry shampoo?
- Roughly 1–2 days in a row between washes. After that, a proper wash with shampoo is needed.
- Does ORO Professional have a dry shampoo?
- No. For roots that lose freshness quickly we recommend Intensive Care Shampoo — balanced cleansing that suits daily use.
- Why does my scalp itch after dry shampoo?
- Most often because product and sebum build up. Wash your hair, take a break, and if the itching persists, see a specialist.
