How to wash your hair correctly
Good haircare does not begin with more products — it begins with correct cleansing. Shampoo works primarily with the scalp and roots, while the lengths receive their main care during the next steps.
Why warm water works better than very hot
Very hot water can increase dryness in the scalp and make the lengths feel drier to the touch. Warm water dissolves shampoo effectively and helps distribute it evenly across the scalp with less discomfort.
The main working area of shampoo
Shampoo is designed primarily to cleanse the scalp and roots — the areas where sebum, styling residue and general build-up accumulate. When this area is cleansed properly, hair stays fresher at the roots for longer.
The lengths receive enough cleansing simply from the foam moving through them as you rinse. Actively scrubbing shampoo through the lengths does not add cleanliness, but can amplify a dry feel.
When a second cleanse actually helps
A second application makes sense when the first barely lathered, when you used richer styling, or when a longer time passed between washes. If the first application already lathered well and the hair feels clean, there is no need to repeat.
Why more foam does not mean better cleansing
The amount of foam depends on water hardness, sebum, styling residue and formula. It is not a direct measure of effectiveness. A calm technique and gentle scalp massage matter more than the volume of foam.
Why shampoo alone does not complete care
Shampoo cleanses but does not soften the lengths or ease detangling. Those functions belong to balsam and, when needed, a mask as a separate step. That is why a base wash usually ends with balsam.
Step by step
- 01Wet the hair thoroughly with warm water.
- 02Distribute a small amount of shampoo across the scalp.
- 03Massage gently with the pads of the fingers, without scratching.
- 04Rinse thoroughly until no foam remains.
- 05Repeat the cleanse only when needed.
- 06Squeeze out excess water gently.
- 07Continue with a mask or balsam according to your scenario.
Common misconceptions
- Shampoo should be applied along the entire length.
- The more shampoo, the cleaner the hair.
- Strong scrubbing cleans better.
- Shampoo alone should make hair fully smooth.
