Conditioner, balsam or mask: what’s the difference
Conditioner, balsam, mask — in shops these words are often mixed up. In fact “conditioner” and “balsam” mostly mean the same thing, while a mask is a separate, deeper step. Here is what goes where and why.
Are conditioner and balsam the same?
Mostly, yes. A rinse-off conditioner and a balsam do the same job: after shampoo they soften the lengths, smooth them and ease detangling. Even the official names of our products describe the balsams as conditioners — for example, Intensive Care Balsam as a “conditioner with argan oil” and Soft Care Balsam as a “conditioner with jojoba oil”.
How a mask differs
- Balsam (conditioner): after every wash, 2–3 minutes; job — soften, smooth, ease combing.
- Mask: when needed, 1–2 times in 7–10 days, 5–10 minutes; job — deeper hydration or nourishment of the lengths.
- Neither replaces the other: after a mask, balsam finishes the wash.
How to combine them
Shampoo → mask (when needed) → balsam → heat protection before drying → oil after. ORO masks can be alternated in different washes: BioHydra for moisture, Lipid & Protein for dry, porous, bleached lengths.
Step by step
- 01Shampoo on the scalp.
- 02Mask when needed — from mid-length, 5–10 minutes.
- 03Balsam after every wash, 2–3 minutes, from mid-length.
- 04Heat protection before blow-drying, oil after drying.
Common misconceptions
- “A mask is stronger, so balsam isn’t needed” — they are different steps; balsam goes after the mask.
- “Conditioner is a leave-in” — in most cases it is a rinse-off balsam; leave-ins are heat protection and oil.
- “Only damaged hair needs balsam” — balsam finishes every wash for any hair.
Frequently asked questions
- How is balsam different from conditioner?
- Mostly it isn’t — they are two names for the rinse-off lengths product used after shampoo.
- Can a mask replace balsam?
- No. A mask is a separate, deeper step; balsam finishes the wash after it.
- How often to use a mask and how often balsam?
- Balsam after every wash; a mask — BioHydra 1–2 times in 7 days, Lipid & Protein once every 7–10 days.
- Which balsam should I choose?
- By your system: Soft Care for a sensitive scalp, Intensive Care — light, for normal and fine hair, Reconstruction PRO — rich, for dry and damaged hair.
