Dry hair: what to do

Dry hair feels rough, looks dull, tangles and frizzes, and the ends quickly look untidy. Here is where dryness comes from, how to tell dry lengths from a dry scalp and which care helps bring back softness and shine.

Where dryness comes from

  • bleaching, colouring, perms or chemical straightening;
  • daily blow-drying and straightening without heat protection;
  • hot water and overly frequent harsh cleansing of the lengths;
  • sun, wind, frost and dry air in heating season;
  • naturally porous or curly hair, where sebum reaches the ends less easily.

Dry lengths or a dry scalp

Dry lengths are about the hair: roughness, dullness, frizz, tangling. Balsam, a mask, heat protection and oil work on them.

A dry scalp is a feeling of tightness after washing. Gentle cleansing helps here, for example the sulfate-free Soft Care Shampoo with niacinamide. If there is itching, flaking, redness or dandruff, see a trichologist or dermatologist.

Which care to choose

  • Mild dryness, lacking softness and elasticity — the BioHydra Therapy mask with hyaluronic acid, 1–2 times in 7 days, with your system’s balsam.
  • Pronounced dryness, porous, bleached or breaking hair — the Reconstruction PRO system with murumuru butter and proteins and the Lipid & Protein Therapy mask once every 7–10 days; BioHydra in between.
  • Roots get oily fast but lengths are dry — Intensive Care Shampoo for the scalp, balsam and mask on the lengths only.

Step by step

  1. 01Wash with warm, not hot water; shampoo on the scalp.
  2. 02Mask when needed — from mid-length, 5–10 minutes.
  3. 03Balsam after every wash, 2–3 minutes.
  4. 04Squeeze hair with a towel without rubbing.
  5. 05Active Thermo Cream on damp lengths before blow-drying; dry on moderate heat.
  6. 06One drop of Argan Elixir Oil on dry ends.
  7. 07Trim ends that have already split regularly.

Common misconceptions

  • “Dry hair should be washed less often” — wash as your scalp needs; care makes up for dry lengths.
  • “Oil alone will fix dryness” — oil is a finish; balsam and mask are the base.
  • “A mask can be used daily” — a rich mask used more often than needed weighs the lengths down.
  • “Split ends can be glued back” — care makes them look neater, but only a trim removes split ends.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my hair is very dry?
Balsam after every wash, the rich Lipid & Protein Therapy mask once every 7–10 days with BioHydra in between, heat protection before every blow-dry and oil on the ends.
Which mask suits dry hair?
For mild dryness — BioHydra Therapy; for pronounced dryness and porosity — Lipid & Protein Therapy. They can alternate in different washes.
Which shampoo suits dry hair?
For dry, porous, bleached lengths — Reconstruction PRO Shampoo. With a dry, sensitive scalp — the sulfate-free Soft Care Shampoo.
Why did my hair get dry after colouring?
Colouring, and especially bleaching, makes the strand surface more porous, so it loses moisture faster. A regular mask, balsam and heat protection are needed.
